A common theme in my coaching sessions with higher education professionals is scheduling. While planning out tasks and blocking calendar time is not a technical skill, adhering to the time planned for a to-do task often seems to require some kind of divine intervention—especially when that task has to do with research, writing, or time for yourself. Is listening just a student skill, or is it something we can intentionally design into our courses? Our recent reading circle explored how shifting classroom dynamics from the "game of school" to authentic dialogue can reduce isolation and deepen learning. Read more about insights from The Dialogic Classroom in Higher Education and join us on February 20th and 27th for two workshops dedicated to turning these insights into practical teaching strategies. Meet Sarah Cochran, FDC's new Programs Coordinator!
What excites you about the role? As a curious person, I'm excited about the learning opportunities this role offers. I look forward to building relationships with faculty and staff and meeting people I haven't had the chance to interact with yet!
What's on your bedside reading table? I began the Master of Innovation and Leadership Program this semester, so a lot of grad school books! I am particularly enjoying Emergent Strategy by Adrienne Maree Brown.
What's the story of your dog's name? In 2009, I named my first Great Dane after Thursday Next, the main character in my favorite book series, Jasper Fforde’s The Eyre Affair. Three years ago, when I brought home my first male Dane, I named him Friday after Thursday Next’s son in the books. I highly recommend the series if you're interested in British humor, light sci-fi, and classic literature!
